T’was the Night Before Nutcracker  - By: Abigail Plank in 1996

T’was the night before Nutcracker

When all through the house

Soldiers were stirring looking for Rat King, the mouse

The back drops were hung above with care

In hopes that through the show they would stay there

The dancers were praying in a circle together

While visions of the Nutcracker danced light as a feather

And Helga with her microphone and us listening closely

We learned that the understudies knew their dances mostly

When all of sudden the music began

We ran to our places hand in hand

We all waited quietly, but something was wrong

Then Curt, shouted “Cut, someone was gone”

We looked high and low for this person we know

We couldn’t seem to find her so on with the show

When what to my wondering eyes should appear

But Father Drosselmeir has found Clara and is wiping her tears

With a long pretty dress that flowed when she twirled

Clara went happily off to her own little world

Along came Fritz with an attitude so bad

He was taken away by his big tall dad

He snuck back in much to Clara’s chagrin

And then he broke the Nutcracker with a big fat grin

Night has fallen and the guests have gone home

Clara is dreaming of where the Nutcracker calls home

Come Spanish, Come Arabian, Come Chinese, and Flute

Come Flowers, Come Candy Canes, Come Jester to Salute

Clara was accepted by the Queen of her land for saving

The Nutcracker back in her little land

So dance for her dance for her dance for her all

Come to the Sugar Plum Fairy’s guest ball

Spanish you’re first and Arabian then Chinese and Flute and Trepak

Then Candy Canes and Flowers then I shall dance last with my Cavalier and that’s that

While the flowers were dancing someone go hurt

“Who is her understudy?” yelled Curt

They ran for the understudy but none could be found

They went on with the rehearsal, the flowers on the ground

And then in a twinkling the Flower Queen arose

And got all the flowers up back on their toes.

All in the world of the Sugar Plum Fairy

Wished that Clara and the Nutcracker Prince could marry

But the Prince from the Land of Sweets

Will be a doll in Clara’s land to anyone he meets

Clara bids farewell to all her new friends

As her time in the Nutcracker’s world has come to an end.
