Nutcracker - A Family Tradition

November 6, 2014

By Renee Maggelet - Mother of Nadia Maggelet, current ARB member - Flower Queen in this year's production

I started our family Nutcracker tradition in 1994 when I took my three-year-old, Natalie, to her first ARB Nutcracker.  Although she ignored the performance and spent the whole time dancing in the aisles, it made an impression and we continued going each year.  Two years later, as we drove to the show, she said to me in a serious tone, "Mom, if I die before I'm six years old, will you go to the Nutcracker every year to remember me?" How sweet!  Fortunately, we've been able to enjoy the ballet together for the past twenty years.  Even better than watching the ballet with my daughter, is watching my daughter dance in the ballet.  For the past eight years, our youngest, Nadia, has had the privilege to dance many parts as a student at Opus II and an ARB company member.  Whether she dances the part of the littlest snow angel, mouse, party girl, or Flower Queen, my heart always swells with pride and joy to see her in a beautiful ballet.
